Why PestDecoder exists
Most pest directories begin with a species name. Most photo identifiers hide their reasoning. PestDecoder begins with the physical clue and keeps uncertainty visible.
The product gap
A person who finds black spots in a cabinet, pellets below a window, skins beside a bed or webbing in flour often does not know which species page to open. PestDecoder is designed for that uncertainty. The interface translates an observation into a shortlist, then shows the user where the match is weak.

What PestDecoder is not
It is not a laboratory service, a medical tool, a pesticide recommendation engine, a structural inspection or a guarantee that a pest is present. It is a structured way to improve the quality of the next observation and recognize when the consequence of being wrong is too high for self-identification.
Initial geographic scope
The first release focuses on common household pests and evidence patterns documented for the United States and Canada. A room or clue may support a candidate without establishing that the species occurs in every region; local extension or licensed expertise remains important for unusual species.
How the project is maintained
The content catalog and deterministic scoring rules are versioned with the site. Automated checks block incomplete records, broken internal links, duplicate metadata and missing canonicals. Twice-yearly reviews prioritize source validity and safety language over publishing volume.
